Five-time NBA All-Star Luka Dončić is heading into the new season with a new mindset and a noticeably leaner body.
But getting here wasn’t easy. He had to do something completely against his nature: stop playing basketball for 30 straight days.
Unpacking Luka Doncic’s impressive physical transformation
In May, after several medical check-ups confirmed he was healthy, Dončić’s team made a bold call. His lead trainer, Dr. Ana Maria Barrio, told him to walk away from the court for a month.
“Just to avoid the basketball court for one month in this offseason,” she explained, as quoted by Athlon Sports. “We let them put the ball away. We were just doing some other kinds of things.”
It was a strategic pause. A chance to finally give his body the break it had long needed. Dončić had been grinding non-stop.
In 2024, he pushed deep into June during the Mavericks’ NBA Finals run. Just days later, he was suiting up for Slovenia in Olympic qualifiers. That brutal schedule left him with virtually no offseason.
This summer was different. For the first time in years, he had no international duties. Team Luka saw an opportunity: a rare window to reset everything.

Still, Dončić didn’t love the idea at first.
“At the beginning, it was hard,” he admitted. “I can’t be without basketball.”
But the break wasn’t random. It was part of a broader strategy to help him shed weight and rebuild his body from the ground up. He swapped out shooting drills for strength training.
Instead of running sets, he worked on mobility and stability. He also found joy in playing padel and pickleball, low-impact sports that still kept him competitive and moving.
That variety helped him rebuild key muscles, glutes, ankles, and adductors, while easing pressure on his knees.
Following an intense and rigorous 30-day training regimen away from basketball, Dončić looks physically fit and mentally ready to embrace the new campaign.
He’s lighter, sharper, and ready for a championship chase in his first full season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Before he gets to the United States, he will look to help Slovenia achieve success at the EuroBasket 2025.
