Spanish La Liga side Villarreal has revealed its stance on Thomas Partey’s legal issue in the United Kingdom after securing his services in the summer transfer window.
Partey signs for Villarreal amid legal issue
He joins on a two-year deal. The contract includes an option to extend after the first season, as reported by talkSPORT.
This move marks a return to the league where Partey made his name. He previously spent years at Atletico Madrid before joining Arsenal in 2020.
At Arsenal, Partey made over 100 appearances. But after talks over a contract renewal collapsed, his time in North London came to an end.
Just days before completing the transfer, Partey appeared at the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025. He faces several charges, including multiple non-consensual acts and one count of sexual assault. He denies all allegations.
The court granted him conditional bail. He must now inform authorities before travelling outside the UK.
Villarreal reveals its stance on Partey’s legal issue
Despite the ongoing legal case, Villarreal pressed ahead with the signing. The decision has sparked mixed reactions from fans. In the wake of massive backlash, the Yellow Submarine released a statement:
“The club is aware that the player [Partey] is currently involved in a legal proceeding in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him.
“The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process…
“Due to the law in England in relation to the ongoing proceedings, the club is unable to comment further.
“Villarreal wishes to reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any acts of violence…”
Partey is expected at Villarreal’s training base on Friday, August 8. He’ll link up with his new teammates as preseason preparations begin for the 2025/26 campaign.
It’s a fresh chapter for the Ghanaian international. But one shadowed by serious allegations that are yet to be resolved.
