Iñigo Martínez has finally opened up about his shock move from FC Barcelona to Saudi Arabian giants Al-Nassr, admitting the offer on the table was simply too good to ignore.

The 34-year-old defender, who joined the Catalan giants from Athletic Club in 2023, had kept silent since the surprising switch earlier this summer. Now, speaking candidly, Martínez revealed the thought process behind his decision.

Iñigo Martinez reveals why he dumped Barcelona for Al-Nassr

“Financially, you can’t compare this league with any other today. Looking at my career and what I’ve achieved, it felt like the right moment to take a step. A footballer’s career is short — I’m 34, and opportunities like this may come once, if ever. It’s hard to say no. I would certainly have considered staying if I had more years left on my Barça contract,” he explained, as quoted by Tribuna.

Martínez was quick to stress that money was not his only motivation. His salary in Spain, he said, was already more than enough to take care of him and his family.

During his brief spell with La Blaugrana, the Spanish international played a key role in a squad that claimed the La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España titles.

After limited minutes under Xavi, he flourished under Hansi Flick’s leadership, making 46 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and delivering six assists.

But with just a year left on his contract, the veteran centre-back agreed to join Al-Nassr as a free agent, linking up with global stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Sadio Mané, and the club’s new recruit João Félix.

When will Iñigo Martinez make his competitive debut for Al-Nassr?

Martínez is expected to make his debut in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final against Al-Ittihad on August 19.

Meanwhile, Barcelona has already lined up a potential replacement, targeting 20-year-old Argentine defender Gerónimo Spina from Atlético Madrid’s reserve side, according to GOAL.
