Barcelona legend Rivaldo Vítor Borba Ferreira, simply known as Rivaldo, has come to the defence of Lamine Yamal.

He wants fans and the media to focus on the teenager’s football, not his private life. Rivaldo’s defence comes on the back of the criticisms levelled against Yamal after his recent birthday celebration. But Rivaldo believes it’s unfair.

“Lamine is a boy with a well-prepared mind,” he said. “He’s intelligent and fully aware of the moment he’s living.”

The 53-year-old explained that fame at a young age brings extra pressure. The media can blow every small act out of proportion, he argues.

He urged people to stop chasing controversies and enjoy Yamal’s talent.

“Those of us who love football want to see him shine,” Rivaldo said, as quoted by Tribuna. “What matters is what he does on the pitch, and that is simply wonderful.”

He also called for calm around the young star. “We hope there won’t be more rumours. They’re frustrating and sad,” he added.

Rivaldo believes Yamal deserves to be recognised for his skill, not off-field noise.

“He has a bright future and should be celebrated for that.”

Meanwhile, Lamine had his first foray in the iconic No.10 shirt during La Blaugrana’s maiden pre-season game. While the 18-year-old was not at his explosive best, the reigning Spanish La Liga champions sealed a 3-1 win against Vissel Kobe.

The 2025 Ballon d’Or contender would hope his sub-par display against the Japanese side was only a blip and will get back to full gear when his side returns to action against FC Seoul on Thursday, July 31.
