Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is on the verge of a fresh chapter in his career, with reports suggesting he has agreed to join Mexican giants Monterrey.
The French striker has been granted permission by his current club, AEK Athens, to travel for a medical ahead of the switch.
From Old Trafford to Athens and now Mexico
Martial’s long spell at Old Trafford came to an end when his contract expired at the close of the 2023/24 season.
He then joined AEK Athens on a free transfer, signing what was reported to be the biggest contract in the Greek club’s history.
However, his time in Greece has been underwhelming. Since arriving, Martial has managed only 24 appearances in all competitions and has been absent from the last six matchday squads, paving the way for an early exit, as noted by Transfermarkt.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Monterrey have now struck an agreement with Martial, with the move expected to be finalised once he completes his medical.
The deal comes after another Mexican club, Pumas, tried but failed to lure him due to his reluctance to lower his wage demands, as noted by the Daily Mail.
Martial joined Manchester United in 2015 for an initial £36 million fee, rising to £58 million with add-ons, and was once tipped to be the next superstar at Old Trafford. His move to Monterrey now represents a new opportunity to revive his career away from Europe.
Linking Up With Sergio Ramos
The transfer also reunites Martial with one of football’s iconic figures. Monterrey signed Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos just seven months ago, and the 39-year-old has already made an impact, guiding the team to the top of the Liga MX standings with six wins from their first seven matches.
Martial will now team up with Ramos at a club that looks determined to dominate Mexican football this season.
